“Can’t Stop The Feeling” – Justin Timberlake
Now if you’ve been waiting for the next Can’t Feel My Face, I can bet my last dollar JT has dropped just that with his new single. Released as a song off the Trolls movie soundtrack last week, “Can’t stop the feeling” already looks like the next big pop song out of the U.S and definitely has everyone buzzing!
This time JT got Max Martin to co-write & produce the song which kind of comes as no surprise to me given his amazing track record. For those who may not know, Max Martin has been behind pop gems like Ariana Grande’s ‘Problem’, Taylor Swift’s ‘Blank Space’, Adele’s latest single ‘Send My Love (To Your New Love)’ and of course The Weeknd‘s ‘Can’t Feel My Face’. As expected, Can’t stop the feeling is a groovy, bass-line driven up-tempo track and really embraces the phrase “feel-good-music”. It’s a song made to make the people dance and let’s just say I tried.. but I couldn’t resist!

“One Time” – AKA
Famous South African rapper AKA known for hits like “Congratulate” and “All Eyes On Me” is back with a brand new single titled “One Time”. The song was debuted during a live performance on SABC 1’s Live Amp music show earlier in March and set social media alight with comments & reactions. “One Time” is warm, celebratory and was (according to him) inspired by Kanye West’s “Highlights” sparking a nostalgic feel. It’s the kind of song you’d expect to hear from the late-great Brenda Fassie if anything, which makes this a standout for an African rap artist like AKA.
True to form, AKA didn’t disappoint with the live performance, bringing out his full band and dropping a few interesting quotables like “what I gotta do for a queen like Sophie Ndaba”. Sophie Ndaba, for those who don’t know, is a famous South African actress known for acting in popular TV soap Generations for 20 years (With rap you never know how serious of a line that is). But quotables aside, I predict this to be another hit single for AKA and I hope this means there’s a new album on the way..

Update: AKA has officially released “One Time” on iTunes! Go cop that NOW!
Respek – Khuli Chana ft. DJ Buckz & Howard
One thing that always fascinates me about Khuli’s music is the musicality of it (is that even a thing?) What I mean is, it’s never just a bunch of 808’s and snares and kicks but it’s really the whole package with him. The music stays relevant but they still manage to fuse the melodies & instruments in such a cool & funky way. Alas, to this very day I still hate that I can’t understand tswana, which makes me feel excluded to some extent from really interacting with the music the way I’d like to. That though, is just my own personal grievance, the fact is his music truly knows no boundaries as they say. Africa clearly loves him, with a solid track record of awards & recognition to show for it.
Anyway, the single is called ‘respek’ and samples Angelique Kidjo’s classic record ‘Agolo’ (proud African moment) which most 90’s kids will know, as well as Marvin Gaye’s ‘Sexual Healing’. In his own words, “Respek is a song created to take people on a trip down memory lane. Inspired by Angelique Kidjo, Marvin Gaye, Adeva & greatest rapper of all time Notorious B.I.G”. I think this one will do some serious rounds and maybe get him an award or two?

“Pay No Mind” ft. Passion Pit – Madeon
These days I’ve been listening to a lot of funky disco-type music. Naturally I love that kind of music from early on in my childhood and have always secretly wanted to produce it! Sadly, I haven’t got around to doing that but I still have the utmost respect for those who can and do make it. Madeon doesn’t exactly fit into the funk/disco bracket but the music he makes certainly incorporates elements of those two genres in quite a meticulous way.
Madeon’s ‘Pay No Mind’ featuring Passion-Pit was the third single from his debut album titled “Adventure”, which was released earlier this year in February. The song turned out to be pretty amazing and was a big success following its release. No point in remixing that right? Wrong! Norwegian electronic duo, Lemaitre, injected a fresh dose of funk into the track and came out with the grooviest remix I’ve heard this year. Their remix really made me love the song even more which in 2015 is quite difficult to do, especially when there are tonnes of sub-par remixes for everything. I’m definitely ready for a beach party on this one!
